Clay

Clay tiles have a deserved reputation for being the premium, natural roofing material. They are colour permanent, long-lasting and age beautifully.

In Britain the first clay plain tiles, said to be copies of wooden shingles, were made by the Romans. The tapered shape of their tegula and imbrex tiles (often referred to today as "over-and-under" tiles) was said to be originally achieved by forming the raw clay over a thigh.

Clay tiles are available in a wide range of colours and sizes, though tend to be fairly small and flat. They are not to be confused with clay pantiles, which are larger and form a pleasing ripple effect across the roofline.
